Black-thighed Falconet

The Black-thighed Falconet (Microhierax fringillarius) can be found in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, where it inhabits forest, forest edge and wooded open areas.

Description

The Black-thighed Falconet and the White-fronted Falconet are the smallest carnivorous birds of prey – averaging 6 inches or 15 cm in length and weighing ~1.23 oz or 35 g, which means that they are barely larger than sparrows (for example, the House Sparrow‘s is 5-7 inches long).

This falcon has black upperparts, whitish-rufous underparts, broad black ear coverts (feathers covering the ears) and black outer thighs.

Breeding / Nesting

It breeds in tree holes.

Diet / Feeding

It feeds on small birds and insects.
