The Caucasian Black Grouse (Tetrao mlokosiewiczi) is a rare and endangered grouse that is closely related to the Eurasian Black Grouse (T. tetrix).
Description
The Caucasian Black Grouse occurs in extreme southwestern Europe and adjacent regions. It breeds in the Caucasus Mountains and northeast Turkey on open slopes.
Description
The males measure 50-55 cm in length; females between 37-42 cm.
The male has an all-black plumage, apart from red eyebrows, and a long, deeply forked tail. The female’s plumage is mostly grey with dark barring.
Breeding / Nesting
The average clutch size consists of 10 eggs laid in a ground scrape. She alone takes care of the eggs and raises the chicks.
Calls / Vocalizations
It has a cackling call.
