The Chestnut-backed Owlet (Glaucidium castanonotum) is endemic to Sri Lanka, where it inhabits wet zone forests.
Description
The Chestnut-backed Owlet measures about 19 cm in length.
The upper plumage is mostly chestnut brown, with darker barring. The plumage below is white with very heavy barring.
The facial disc is mainly brown and the eyes are yellow. There is a white neckband.
Males and females look alike.
Nesting / Breeding
They nest in tree cavities. The typical clutch consists of 2 eggs.
Diet / Feeding
The Chestnut-backed Owlet mostly feeds on insects.
Calls / Vocalizations
Its call is described as a slow kraw-kraw.
