The Cinnamon Bitterns (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus) breed in tropical Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to China and Indonesia.
They are mostly resident, but some northern populations may migrate short distances.
The Cinnamon Bittern measures 38cm in length. It has a short neck and longish bill.
The male is cinnamon above and buff below.
The female’s back and crown are brown.
Juveniles look like females, but are heavily streaked brown below.
They breed in reedbeds. They nest on platforms of reeds in shrubs. The average clutch consists of 4 – 6 eggs.
Cinnamon Bitterns feed on insects, fish and amphibians.
