Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus)

The Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus) is widespread and common in coniferous forests throughout central and northern Europe and in deciduous woodland in France and the Iberian peninsula.

In Great Britain, it is restricted to the ancient pinewoods of the Spey Valley in Scotland, an area some 30 miles in length and two or three miles wide, and seldom strays far from its haunts.

A few vagrant Crested Tits have been seen in England. It is mostly resident (non-migratory).

They join winter tit flocks with other species.

Description:

It has an erectile crest, the tip of which is often recurved and a distinctive throat patch and collar.

Calls / Vocalization:

Their calls are described as a constant zee, zee, zee.

Breeding / Nesting:

They make their nests in rotting stumps.

Diet / Feeding:

They feed on insects, including caterpillars, as well as seeds. They often feed low down in trees.
