The Crimson-fronted Barbets (Megalaima rubricapillus) – also known as Ceylon Small Barbets or Small Barbets – are endemic to the open woodlands of Sri Lanka off southern coast of the Indian subcontinent.
Description
These plump barbets averge 15 cm or ~6 inches in length. They have short necks, large heads and short tails.
The plumage is mostly green. There is a blue band down the side of the head and neck, and a black crescent behind the eye. Distinctive bristles fringe their heavy bills.
Diet / Feeding
They primarily feed on fruits, but will also eat a wide range of insects, such as ants, cicadas, dragonflies, crickets, locusts, beetles, moths and mantids.
Breeding / Nesting
They nest in tree holes and hens usually lay 2 to 4 eggs, which are incubated for 13 to 15 days.
