The Mountain Barbets (Megalaima monticola) are Asian Barbets that are endemic to the island of Borneo located north of Java in Indonesia, where they commonly occur on Mount Kinabalu south to Kapuas and the Kayan Mountains. They inhabit moist hill and montane forests.
They resemble female Red-throated Barbets – except, they have smaller bills and lack the red spot at the base of the rictal bristles (“whiskers”) on each side of the upper bill.
Diet / Feeding
Mountain Barbets primarily feed on fruits, but will also eat a wide range of insects, such as ants, cicadas, dragonflies, crickets, locusts, beetles, moths and mantids.
Breeding / Nesting
These birds nest in tree holes and hens usually lay 2 to 4 eggs, which are incubated for 13 to 15 days.
