Red-throated Caracara (Ibycter americanus)

The Red-throated Caracara, (Ibycter americanus) is a social species of bird of prey found in Central and South America, specifically the following countries: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. It inhabits subtropical or tropical moist lowland and montane forests.

Diet / Feeding

Unlike other caracaras – which are scavengers – the Red-throated Caracara mostly feeds on the larvae of bees and wasps, but will also take the adult insects, fruits and berries.
