The genus Penelopides contains a group of small hornbills found in the forests of the Philippines and the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
This group is also commonly referred to as the tarictic hornbills in reference to the main call of several of the species.
Description
All members of this group are sexually dimorphic (gender can be visually identified).
The males of all species – except the Sulawesi Tarictic Hornbill – have a whitish-buff and black plumage.
All females – except the Mindoro Tarictic Hornbill – have a mostly black plumage.
They have a ridged plate-like structure on the base of their bill.

- Sulawesi Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides exarhatus)
- Found on the islands of Sulawesi and nearby islands (part of Sunda Islands of Indonesia).
- Visayan Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides panini)
- Found on the islands of Panay, Negros, Masbate, and Guimaras in the Philippines.
- Luzon Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides manillae)
- Found forests on the island of Luzon and nearby islands in the northern Philippines.
- Mindanao Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides affinis)
- P. a. affinis (nominate). Found on the islands of Mindanao, Dinagat and Siargao in the Philippines.
- P. affinis basilanica. Found on the island of Basilan in the Philippines.
- Samar Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides samarensis)
- Found on the islands of Samar, Calicoan, Leyte and Bohol in the east-central Philippines.
- Mindoro Tarictic Hornbill (Penelopides mindorensis)
- Found on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines.
Diet / Feeding
Their diet consists mainly of fruits, figs and insects.
Nesting / Breeding
The female seals itself inside a tree hole for egg-laying. During this time, the male and helpers will provide food for the female and the young.
