The Wailing Cisticolas (Cisticola lais) are endemic to the following African countries:
Angola, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
They live in subtropical or tropical high-altitude grassland.
Sub-species:
Lynes’s Cisticola (Cisticola lais) – found in the northern range – in Uganda, Kenya and Northern Tanzania. Note: this subspecies is by some authorities considered a separate species.
