White-rumped Tanager (Cypsnagra hirundinacea)

The White-rumped Tanager (Cypsnagra hirundinacea) is the only member of the genus Cypsnagra.

Description

They average 16 cm in length and weigh around 25-34 g.

Distribution / Habitat

White-rumped Tanagers are endemic to Brazil, where they exist in territorial groups of three to six individuals.

They are also found in Paraguay, Bolivia and Suriname – usually at elevations of 700-1000 m.

They inhabit grasslands with short trees.

Breeding / Nesting

They build cup nests made of woven grasses about 1-2 meters off the ground . The average clutch consists of 3 to 4 blue eggs speckled around the large end with brown or black spots. The young of previous seasons help the parents tend the nest and chicks.

Diet

They eat insects, such as beetles, grasshoppers or crickets – caught on the ground or in flight. On occasion, they eat fruit.
