The White-winged Coot (Fulica leucoptera) is a South American rail found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Falkland Islands, Paraguay, and Uruguay, where it inhabits swamps, marshes, lagoons and freshwater lakes.
Its name is derived from its broad white tips to the secondary flight feathers (shorter, upper “arm” feathers) which are only visible in flight. It also has white undertail feathers. The bill is yellowish and the shield above the bill can vary in color from pale yellow to bright orange.
