Similar species: The White-crested Laughingthrush looks similar to the Sumatran Laughingthrush (which was formerly considered as a subspecies). However, while the plumage of the Sumatran Laughingthrush is blackish-brown and white; the plumage of the White-crested Launghingtrush is rufescent-brown and white; and the black mask is relatively broad.
