The Best Fresh Foods for Pet Parrots (and What to Skip)

A seed-only diet is the silent killer of pet parrots. Fresh foods aren't a luxury, they are the difference between a bird that survives and a bird that thrives.

The daily base

Aim for roughly 60–70% pellets, 25–30% fresh foods, and a small amount of seeds and nuts as training rewards.

Best daily fresh foods

• Leafy greens: kale, dandelion greens, romaine, swiss chard
• Cruciferous: broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts
• Orange vegetables: sweet potato, carrot, butternut squash
• Peppers: bell peppers and chilies (birds don't feel capsaicin heat)

Great rotation foods

• Berries (any color)
• Pomegranate seeds
• Apple, pear, mango, papaya
• Cooked quinoa, brown rice, sprouted lentils

Foods to skip entirely

Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic in large amounts, fruit pits and apple seeds, salty/sugary human foods, anything mouldy.

A simple weekly system

Spend 20 minutes once a week making "chop", a coarse mix of 6–8 of the above foods. Portion into daily bags and freeze. Each morning, thaw one bag for a balanced, varied bowl with zero daily effort.
