Black-winged Lory aka Blue-cheeked Lory
Lories and Lorikeets: Overview (Naming, Range and Description)
Distribution:
The Black-winged Lory(Eos cyanogenia), also known as Blue-cheeked Lory, that is endemic to Indonesia – specifically the Islands of Biak, Numfor, Manim and Mios Num in Geelvink Bay, Western New Guinea where they frequent forests areas and coastal habitat. This species is often seen roosting in coconut trees.
Due to ongoing destruction of habitat, small and localized population size and, in some areas, hunting, the Black-winged Lory is at risk of becoming extinct and is, therefore, evaluated as Vulnerable on IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is listed on Appendix II of CITES.
Description
The long-tailed Black-winged Lory is medium-sized, growing up to 30 cm (12 in) in length, including tail.
The plumage is mostly bright red, with a black shoulder, red eyes, an orangey red bill and violet ear-patches behind the eyes. The underwings are red, turning towards the black tips.
Males and females look alike.
Black-winged Lories as Pets or in Aviculture:
Due to their endangered status, any suitable specimen that cannot be released back into their natural habitat (native range) should preferably be placed into a well-managed breeding program to ensure the continued survival of this species.
