The Golden Conure or Queen of Bavaria Conure (Guarouba guarouba – recently reclassified from Aratinga guarouba) is restricted to northeastern Brazil, south of the Amazon river, from the west bank of the Rio Tapajos, Para and east to northwestern Maranhaao. They prefer hilly upland areas of terra firma rather than verzea, or flooded forest. They are pressured by habitat loss, predation, hunting and trapping.
Description:
As the name implies, Golden Conures are covered all over with bright yellow feathers, which are in striking contrast to the dark green primary flights. They average 14 inches (36 cm) in length. Because of their massive head and beak, many people feel the Goldens more closely resemble macaws than conures. Immature birds have scattered green feathers on the upper wing-coverts and cheeks and are rather slimmer in build.
The Golden Conure in Aviculture:
Golden conures are amongst the rarest conures in the wild in addition to the pet trade. They are among the most expensive conures both to purchase and to care for, although many owners feel that the benefits outweigh the cost. It
Because of their endangered status, many experts believe that these conures should not be kept in captivity unless they are placed into a breeding program. It is one of the most desirable birds an aviculturist could possess.
Do they make good family pets?
Because of their endangered status, it is best to place any suitable golden conures into a breeding program to ensure survival of the species. However, should you consider a Golden Conure as a pet, the following information may be of value.

Breeding:
These conures are generally fairly easy to breed. Most will readily accept artificial nesting boxes. Aggression has been noted between the adults which has resulted in the destruction of eggs or chicks. In such cases, the eggs need to be placed with foster parents or should be artificially incubated. A great challenge is to obtain these rare birds. In the United States, a special federal permit is required, and they are costly.
