The Red-eared Conure aka Red-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura hoematotis) is restricted to the mountains along the coast of northern Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montanes and heavily degraded former forest.
Description:
The average length is 25 cm or 10 inches (includes tail).
Its general plumage is green; forehead and crown are brown with each feather edged dull blue. The back of the head and nape are olive-green with variable dull brownish-yellow edging. The ear-coverts are brownish-red and the side of neck brownish-grey with brownish-white edging. The throat and upper breast are olive-greenish with dirty grey edging. The abdomen are variably marked dark red. The edge of wing and under tail-coverts are greenish-blue. The primary coverts and outer-webs of primaries (longest wing feathers) are blue. The tail upperside brownish-red with olive-green tips, the underside dark brownish-red, and the periophthalmic ring is dark grey. The iris brown and the feet brownish-grey. The bill grey horn-color.
Both males and females look alike.
Immatures as adults, but with darker plumage; very few reddish-brown feathers to ear-coverts.
Pet Potential / Personality:
The red-eared conures are not well known in captivity and little is known about their potential as pets. However, it is assumed that they share many characteristics of the conure species.

Breeding / Reproduction:
These conures are fairly easy to breed. Below are the dimensions of nesting boxes usually used for these conures. However, the dimensions can vary widely, as they are influenced by the owner’s and the birds’ preferences. The preferences of the breeding birds can also be influenced by the size and type of nest-box / log in which the bird was hatched and reared. Try and keep that one for their exclusive use.
