Why Is My Parrot Biting Me? The Real Reasons (and the Fix)

If you get bitten every time you reach into the cage, you are not failing as an owner, you're missing a signal. Parrots almost never bite out of "aggression." They bite because every softer signal they offered was ignored.

What biting really means

Before a bite, your parrot almost always did something subtler: leaned away, pinned their eyes, flared a tail, lifted a foot, opened their beak. Bites are the loudest sentence in a conversation that started ten seconds earlier.

The three real causes

1. Fear: your hand entered their personal space without a clear invitation.
2. Hormones: seasonal hormones spike defensiveness, especially around perceived "nesting" areas like cages.
3. Frustration: they cannot escape, they cannot make you stop, so they escalate.

The fix (it's not "discipline")

Disciplining a bird teaches them you are unpredictable and dangerous. The fix is the opposite: build a vocabulary together so you never need to override their consent.

Step one: read the body language

Spend a week only observing. Note what their body did right before every bite. Patterns appear quickly.

Step two: trade requests for invitations

Replace "step up" demands with an offered hand at chest height. Wait. If they don't lean in, you have your answer, and you respect it.

Step three: pair every interaction with something they want

A favorite seed, a head scratch they actually requested, a return to their preferred perch. Trust is currency. Spend it.
