The Philippine Hanging Parrots (Loriculus philippensis) is endemic to the islands of Luzon, Banton, Polillo, Marinduque and Catanduanes, in the Philippines.
They are an endangered species (CITES II) due to habitat destruction as well as capturing of nestlings by locals for the pet trade.
Description:
The Philippine Hanging Parrot averages 5.5 inches (14 cm) in length.
Its general plumage is green. The breast and abdomen are yellowish-green. They have a red forehead bordered by narrow yellow line. The forehead, front of the crown, throat patch, upper breast, the lower back and upper tail-coverts are red. The back of the crown and the head are suffused with gold-yellow. There is a narrow gold-orange band to the nape. The sides of the lower back are washed bright pale blue. The greater under wing-coverts are blue. The underside of the flight feathers and tail are greenish blue.
The bill is orange-red. Their irises are brown and the feet are brownish-flesh colored.
Hens look like males, except they lack the red throat and breast patch, which are replaced with a light yellowish tinge. The forward cheeks are tinged with blue.
Young birds look like females except that they have a paler bill and there is no or only little red to the forehead.

- Distribution: The Central Island Hanging Parrots are endemic to the Guimaras and Negros Islands in the Philippines.
- Description: They average 5.5 inches (14 cm) in length. They look similar to the nominate species featured above, but the back of the crown is a dirty gold-yellow, with a coloring between that of the Panay Hanging Parrots (Loriculus philippensis panayensis) and the Bourns’ Hanging Parrots (Loriculus philippensis bournsi). The back of the head lacks the gold-yellow coloration that can be seen in the nominate form and the gold-orange band to the nape is either absent or can only be seen faintly. The red band to the forehead is broader. Female look like males, but lack the red throat or breast patch, replaced by a yellowish tinge. The gold-yellow coloration at the back of the crown is also absent.

Worcester’s Hanging Parrots (Loriculus philippensis worcesteri)
- Distribution: They are endemic to the islands of Samar, Leyte and Bohol, in the Philippines.
- Description: The Worcester’s Hanging Parrot averages 5.5 inches (14 cm) in length. It looks like the Mindanao Hanging Parrot (Loriculus philippensis apicalisis), except the entire crown is red, turning orange on the back of head. The back is tinged faintly orange and its red breast patch is slightly bigger. The irises are greyish-brown. Females look like males, except they lack the red throat and breast patch. The upper back is green tinged only lightly with orange, and her lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird’s head) and cheeks are pale blue.
