The Ornate Lory (Trichoglossus ornatus) is endemic to Sulawesi Island and surrounding islands in the Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes) – part of the Maluku island group in Indonesia Group, Indonesia.

They are usually seen in pairs or small family groups, sometimes together with Yellow-and-Green Lorikeets. Their preferred habitat includes the forest edge, secondary forest, bushy open terrain, cultivated plots and towns, upland valleys but rarely in primary forest at 320 to 550 ft, but sometimes up to 3300 ft above sea-level.

    Ornate Lory

    Description:

It averages 10 inches in length and weighs about 4 oz. The crown is dark purplish-blue. There are yellow side patches on the nape. The back of the nape is reddish orange. The chin and throat and most of face is reddish-orange. The back and the wings are bright green. The wing primaries (= longest wing feathers) (longest wing feathers) are tipped blackish. The underwing is black with yellow and green. The chin and the chest are reddish barred with dark blue. The belly is dark green and the thighs are yellow-green. The uppertail is dark green with yellowish tips and the undertail is yellowish and pinkish at the base. The beak and the irises are orange and the legs are grey-green.

Both males and females look alike.

    Breeding:

They may start breeding in September to October. The hen incubates the eggs for about 24 to 27 days and the young fledge when they are about 80 days old.

    Calls / Vocalizations

The voice of the Ornate Lory sounds like a shrill “kreet…kreet” in flight, high pitched “wee-oo-wee, variety of whistling notes and grating screech.

Companion lories may turn into excellent talkers; some having whole sentences in their vocabulary. With a little training they can be taught to communicate with words rather than using their shrill calls for the most part. However, their natural call / voice cannot be entirely eliminated; but their occurrence can be reduced. The owner has to understand that even with training, the lory voice can get quite loud, with a high pitched screech.
